Medical Surgical Nursing Science Study

Florence Nightingale (1859) was the first person to identify nursing as a separate discipline from medical science (medicine). To prove this statement, nursing theorists seek to define nursing in terms of a concept.

According to Law no. 38 of 2014 concerning nursing practice states that nursing is an activity of providing care to individuals, families, groups, or communities, both sick and healthy. Nursing is a form of professional service in the form of fulfilling basic needs given to healthy and sick individuals who experience physical, psychological, and social disorders in order to achieve optimal health degrees (Nursalam, 2015).

In the nursing law, the duties and authorities of nurses are nursing care providers, extension workers and counselors for clients, nursing service managers, nursing researchers, implementing tasks based on delegation of authority, and or implementing tasks in certain limited circumstances.

Law No. 36 of 2014 concerning health states that the types of health workers included in the group of nursing personnel consist of various types of nurses, namely public health nurses, child health nurses, maternity nurses, medical surgical nurses, geriatric nurses, and mental health nurses.

Medical surgical nursing is a nursing science that focuses on the concepts and principles of medical surgical nursing that underlie the application of nursing science and technology in meeting the needs of adult clients who experience physiological changes with or without structural disorders, such as the respiratory system, cardiovascular system, digestive system, urinary system. , endocrine system, nervous system, musculoskeletal system, integumentary system, immune and male reproductive system and chronic disease problems (UI, 2015).

Medical surgical nursing is presented to improve the quality of nursing care provided by nurses to clients, especially to clients with disorders of the body's physiological system.

The development of nursing in Indonesia has developed in a better direction, this is evidenced by the passing of the law on nursing practice which regulates the duties and authorities of nurses in health services and regulates the types of nurses and higher nursing education in Indonesia, can be seen in the picture below

As a nurse, you have the obligation to provide holistic nursing care (bio-psycho-socio-spiritual-cultural), as well as nurses who with medical-surgical nursing provide nursing care to the above systems.

The nursing process which includes assessment, diagnosis, intervention, implementation and evaluation is a process that must be a benchmark for nurses in providing nursing care. Nursing practice in Indonesia is based on humanity, scientific values, ethics and professionalism, benefits, justice, protection, and the health and safety of clients.

Nursing practice in Indonesia is divided into independent practice and practice in health facilities (hospitals). One of the independent nursing practices that are currently being pursued by nurses is the practice of wound care.
